Chunky “dad” sneakers are the shoe to have this season

There was a time not too long ago when the coolest sneakers to wear were sleek, white, minimal and honestly, quite boring. Everyone was all about the simple, versatile look. I mean, if you didn’t own one or two Adidas Stan Smith shoes, did you even follow trends? From luxury brands like Gucci & YSL to affordable retailers like Zara and H&M, everyone was selling these sneakers like hot cakes. But, that ship is slowly sailing.

The minimal look is being phased out and replaced by the polar-opposite cousin, the chunky “dad” sneakers. These shoes give us 1995 Sketchers vibes and resemble the look of every 80’s dad on a Sunday afternoon. Currently, they’re truly taking over fashion weeks across the globe and are all over every Instagram model’s page.  The Raf Simons X Adidas Ozweego was one of the first chunky sneakers to really set the tone. Soon after, Balenciaga released the Triple S sneaker and that really took the world by storm.

• Don’t wear them with a minimalist outfit. You don’t want them to become the centre of attention.
• Wear several layers on top to balance out the look
• Change it up with bright colours and pieces that will add structure to the entire look
• Don’t go sockless. These shoes are usually a bit heavy and you’re going to want the support from the socks.
• Feel free to wear them with trousers, not just jeans and joggers. The edgy look will totally work with a trendy pair of plaid trousers
• Rocking a full suit? Why not wear your chunky sneakers then!

Does that mean white minimalist sneakers are out? The short answer is no, but they’re on their way of becoming not-so-trendy. Why? Well, if you’re a pre-teen and your dad’s wearing the minimalist whites, you’re likely not going to want to. Which means, these babies will be out of trend pretty soon.
