The storage space miracle: 4 tips for purchasing closets
The storage space miracle: 4 tips for purchasing closets
Closets are the ideal solution for eliminating chaos and maximising storage space. Here’s some advice from Stylight on how to find the right closet to suit your needs:
1. What closet is right for what room?
Large closets with striking designs call for equally spacious surroundings. In small rooms, it’s best to opt for plain closets in light colours.
- A decorative feature for the living room: Display cabinets with glass doors or wall cabinets installed at eye level are ideal for showcasing little gems like ornaments or grandma’s porcelain while also offering protection from dust and dirt.
- A practical feature for the bedroom: Closets helps to keep bedrooms uncluttered. Space-saving drawer units and adjustable shelves create well-organized storage space for clothes.
- A hardwearing feature for the bathroom: Bathroom cabinets with integrated mirrored doors provide space for hand towels, cosmetics and other items, and should be manufactured from water-resistant materials. Cabinets made from glazed hardwood (oak or beech) or synthetics are ideal for bathrooms.
2. The right-sized room
- Preparation is the key: You should start by measuring up the room and take the dimensions into account at the planning stage. In the worst case scenario, an over-sized closet can make a room look small and cramped.
- The ideal solution: a floor plan of the room including precise dimensions
- Fit for a perfectionist: a custom-made closet fits perfectly in the space available.
3. Will the closet go with the rest of the furnishings?
An eclectic mix of styles soon makes a room look busy and chaotic. It is therefore important to make sure that your new closet is in keeping with the style of your existing furnishings:
- Cottage style: natural materials such as light wood and rattan or furniture made from turned wood
- Industrial style: loft style, rusty metal, used-look wood, concrete, unfinished look
- American style: XXL, spacious, built-in closets, dark wood (teak), white surfaces
- Modern style: high-gloss surfaces, stainless steel, handleless, minimalistic design
4. Quality and functionality
A closet is generally a lifelong investment, so it’s worth looking out for a well-built model made from quality materials.
Expensive versus low-cost:
- Closets made from solid wood such as teak are durable, but also expensive (500 USD upwards).
- Closets made from chipboard or MDF with a synthetic surface are available for less (starting at 80 USD), but might not stand up to moving house more than a couple of times.
Checklist for purchasing a closet: Where do you want to put your new closet and what type are you looking for? How much space have you got? What style of closet are you looking for? How much do you want to spend?
Closets: ideal for a tidy home with bags of storage space.
