Not just a British classic: The famous Barbour jacket
The Barbour wax jacket isn’t just a piece of clothing; it’s a living legend in the fashion world. Born out of the practical needs of British outdoor enthusiasts, this rugged garment has transcended its original purposes to become a symbol of timeless style and durability.
A heritage rooted in British tradition
The history of the Barbour wax jacket begins in 1894 , when John Barbour founded his company in South Shields, England. He designed the jacket for sailors and fishermen to protect them from the harsh weather of the North Sea. But it wasn’t long before the jacket became popular in rural communities across the country. The waxed cotton fabric, a revolutionary material at the time, offered unparalleled protection against wind and rain while allowing the wearer to move freely.
What began as a practical solution for outdoor workers soon caught the eye of British nobility . The Barbour wax jacket became a staple in hunting and equestrian activities, and earned its place in the wardrobes of the royal family. This royal seal of approval catapulted the jacket into the realm of streetwear, where it has remained a coveted piece for decades.
What makes the Barbour jacket so iconic?
The enduring appeal of the Barbour wax jacket lies in its thoughtful design. Key features include:
- Waxed cotton fabric : Offers water resistance and develops a unique patina over time.
- Corduroy collar : Adds a touch of comfort and sophistication.
- Multiple pockets : Convenient for outdoor activities and daily use.
- Brass zipper : Durable and adds a classic touch.
- Signature tartan lining : A nod to British heritage.
These elements combine to create a jacket that is as functional as it is stylish and is at home in both the country and the city.
A price that reflects quality
The price of the Barbour wax jacket has evolved over the years, reflecting its journey from workwear to luxury item. Today, prices typically range from $200 for the Ashby model to around $400 for the Beaufort Wax Jacket . Many see the jacket as a true investment piece that, if properly cared for, will last for years, if not decades.
The Barbour wax jacket in pop culture
The jacket has made notable appearances in film and television, perhaps most famously its appearance by Daniel Craig as James Bond in “Skyfall ,” which cemented its status as a garment that is both sturdy and sophisticated.
But some celebrities, especially from England, are also fans of the timeless classic. The jacket has been spotted on the likes of “it-girl” Alexa Chung and even the Princess of Wales herself!
