Layering 1-0-1: How To Stay Warm Without Adding Bulk
‘Tis the season for layering! When cold weather comes, so does the need to pile on layer after layer in order to stay warm. But it isn’t just a mindless piling on: it’s a subtle art, but like all arts, it can be mastered.
In preparation for winter ahead, here are five tips to become a layering pro.
The first one is kind of a given, but revising the basics never hurts: “stack” your layers from the thinnest to the thickest, so that each layer is thicker than the previous.
Proportions are another fundamental aspect of layering; mastering the balance between them will make or break your outfit.
For example, if you’re styling a jumper with a button-up shirt that is longer than the jumper, consider how letting the shirt peek out from underneath looks. Depending on what bottoms you’re wearing and your own proportions, the shirt might flow perfectly or create a visual barrier that you want to avoid.
