SWIMWEAR REPORT 2022

Swimwear collections have been presented on the catwalks, brands have released their collections and many magazines have already presented the swimwear trends for 2022. But which trends are really peaking in interest online? We analyzed our users’ shopping and browsing behavior to find out – we’re seeing a resurgence of the one-piece swimsuit while, in contrast, bikinis have been all but dethroned. Clicks for one-piece swimwear have doubled in March and April 2022 compared to the same period last year, while clicks for bikinis have dropped by 13%.

We also couldn’t help but notice a strong influence from the 90’s, with flashy colors, vintage cuts, and extreme cut-outs…Nostalgia is taking over fashion trends and swimwear is no exception. Here are the 8 swimsuit trends that are the most sought in 2022:

The 90’s style swimsuit

Swimwear might just be the new ready-to-wear for the summer, and in that case we had to mention the one-piece swimsuit. This year, in an ultra 90’s version, the one piece style that is trending features a neckline so deep that it’s often worn with a t-shirt underneath, just like how Chanel presented it in their SS2022 fashion show. On Stylight, the clicks for this category of one-piece swimsuits have increased by +175% compared to last year.

The Swim-skirt

Sexy beaches are becoming a little bit more demure thanks to these new bikini bottoms – the swim-skirt. Practical and flirty at the same time, this beach item is a real must for 2022. On Google, searches for “swim skirt” have increased by +163%.

Swimsuits with belts

In 2022, swimsuits are being accessorized with belts, accentuating the waist and putting more emphasis on the idea of swimwear as ready-to-wear. The concept of apparel that serves multiple purposes has been a key trend throughout 2022 so far and these pieces fit right in. By throwing on a skirt and sneakers, these one-pieces easily transition from swimwear to ready-to-wear and on Stylight we’ve already seen a +56% increase in clicks!

Crochet swimsuits / Bikinis

Crochet will continue to be a big trend for Summer 2022 as we saw at Coachella already this year – and the same goes for swimwear. From bikinis to one-pieces this look is the epitome of effortless, casual style – often paired with oversized button-ups or summery mini skirts. With a 95% increase in clicks on Stylight, it looks like our users are embracing the crochet swimsuit trend.

Color and Fabric Trends

In terms of colors, we are seeing a lot of orange (which is also one of the star colors of the ready-to-wear trends of summer 2022) along with very bright colors like fluorescent pink. Texture is also here this year to add a little drama to the more classic styles of this season- which means materials are being crumpled, gathered, or distressed in unique ways. Finally, checkerboard print is one of the darlings of the season.
