The right pillow ensures a healthy sleep. A floor cushion replaces a chair and creates an easy-going atmosphere, while decorative cushions can add pizazz to a bed or sofa. All for not much money. Stylight advises where and when to use which pillow or cushion.
The bed pillow
A bed pillow should take the strain off your neck at night-time and let you enjoy a relaxing slumber. The height of the pillow should suit your sleeping style and the firmness of your mattress. As a general rule:
- Side-sleeper/hard mattress: higher pillow
- Back-sleeper/soft mattress: lower pillow
- Front-sleeper: ergonomically bad for your spine, since your pillow can provide no support
The pillow filling is also important. For those with allergies down feathers are out. Pillows with synthetic fiber fillings, which are washable and which also have a mite-proof covering are more suitable. Previously pillows measured mostly 30 x 30 inches. Today narrower pillows are recommended (30 x 15 inches), to support only the head and not the shoulder area.

Decorative cushions
With decorative cushions the look is the main feature. With regard to color, shape (rectangular, square, round) and patterns (plain, checked, striped, knitted) you are free to choose what it is you like. A few rules of thumb: Orient the size of cushions to your furniture – and think: Large corner sofa = large decorative cushions. Small armchair = small decorative cushions. Seat cushions
Seat cushions are perfect for cozy lounging on the floor. You can sit more easily on firm cushions than on soft beanbag chairs. If seat cushions are also to be garden-compatible, they should be made from weather-proof material.

If a seat cushion is used as a bolster on a chair, it has to be the right size so the cushion is not too small and does not go over the edges of the chair. There is a pillow to suit every type of sleeper. In contrast decorative pillows are (almost) only about the look. So your cushions match the rest of the apartment, get the right size ratio.
