The Perfect Setting: Your Dream Tabletop

The Perfect Setting: Your Dream Tabletop

What’s a dining room without the perfect dining table? The bed without a good nightstand? Or the office without a practical desk? And what’s a table without the right tabletop? If you’ve already chosen a table frame, now you need to choose your perfect table top from the various models available.

Which Material?

The most popular choice for tabletops is solid wood (beech, for example) and they are usually stained and varnished. Melamine coated fiberboards are resistant to heat and scratches as well as being easy to clean and are therefore suitable as a dining table as well as a desk. Verneered particle boards are easy to install because they already have holes for the attachment drilled in. Glass is another popular choice, particularly because it doesn’t seem too big in a small room. Finally, plastic is the perfect material for kids or the outdoors because it’s durable and easy to clean.

Which Shape?

Table tops are available in a variety of shapes. Round and oval models are great as coffee tables, bar tables, or side tables Square and rectangular models are ideal for the dining room table or desk. Corner tabletops that can be attached directly to the wall are a great use of a small space.

Which Room?

Square tabletops are great for dining rooms and living rooms. Oblong models, in comparison, are great for a study or an office. They also function well as a space saving bar table in a small kitchen. Small, round tables are great as coffee and side tables for your living room or hallway.

Which Frame?

Single leg frames are enough for small square or round tables. Desks are often available with just two feet because the other side of the table is attached directly to the wall. The general rule is that the larger the table top, the more legs are needed for the frame. Materials such as steel, wood, and plastic are the most popular choices.

The size of your tabletop should be determined by the space it will be in and the frame it will have. Smaller models are great for side tables and larger ones are better in the dining room or office.
