Tartan print, classic houndstooth check or bold Argyle look – the geometric designs of plaid sweaters are just as wide-ranging as the places where these garments can be worn. However, sweaters with a plaid pattern really come into their own when sported for leisure. Here’s how to style them for everyday wear.
Look 1: the denim look
Although plaid comes in lots of different varieties, any checkered pattern will look good with your favorite blue jeans – no matter what the design or color of the print. There’s only one thing to bear in mind: the bigger the plaid pattern, the more striking the outfit. Try wearing a denim shirt underneath your plaid sweater and rolling up the sleeves; then round off the outfit with black biker boots.
Look 2: the mini skirt combo
A cardigan or sweat jacket in plaid look paired up with a short, flared winter skirt will keep you warm and cozy even in frosty temperatures. This outfit is best combined with a white long-sleeved shirt, black riding boots and white overknee socks. If you’re very sensitive to the cold, feel free to throw on a military-look parka and a cashmere scarf – also featuring a plaid pattern if desired.
Look 3: the chino combo
Knitted sweaters in bold tartan go well with chinos as well as jeans. The pants should be ankle-length at most and be teamed up with brightly colored suede loafers – no socks please!

It’s also wise to avoid eclectic combinations with other bold patterns, such as dots or stripes. Otherwise the outfit will just look too busy.
