Oasis of comfort: 5 tips for purchasing sofas

Small or large, leather or fabric, hard or soft – picking the perfect sofa is not an easy feat! We have five tips for your journey through the sofa jungle:

1. The right size

Before your purchase, measure the space where the sofa is supposed to go and decide on its size. Compact loveseats and sectionals are ideal for smaller rooms, and large spaces lend themselves to living room sets that can act als room dividers at the same time. The rule of thumb for seating is: One person needs about 24 inches of space, meaning a loveseat should be 48 inches wideand a three-seater sofa 72 inches.

2. Choose the cover to match your interior or select an accent color

What kind of sofa cover you choose, depends on your personal taste as well as on how the sofa will be used. For your sofa to withstand kids and pets, you should choose a robust, heavy-duty cover (e.g. leather, thick wool). If the sofa is only used as a spare bed, you can opt for a thinner fabric cover. Either match the color of your new sofa to the rest of your interior style or purposefully choose an accent color. In a rather plain and monochrome room, a sofa with a colorful pattern can brighten up the space.

3. Choose the perfect firmness

Softer doesn’t automatically mean more comfortable. The softer the seating, the deeper you sink in. Those with back problems might find a soft sofa hard to get up from. They might fare better with a firmer upholstering, with only minimal yield.

4. Robust or removable covers

Bright fabrics get dirty easily, are harder to clean, and therefore best for people without children or pets. If a spill happens, removable covers come in handy, since they can simply be taken off and washed. Leather is innately less prone to collect dirt and can easily be cleaned with leather cleaner.

5. Sofa beds are transformation geniuses

Designer sofa by day, comfy bed by night: A pull-out sofa is especially useful in a studio apartment, where there’s little space for a full size bed. It also comes in handy as a spare bed for guests.

The sofa is the center hub of your living room and a favorite space to read, relax or simply watch TV. Good reasons to be fully informed before making a decision. If you get the right size for your space, select a robust cover for your kids and pets, and choose a firmness perfect for your needs, you will be ready to cuddle up and get comfy on your new sofa.

Choose your sofa well: Size, cover, and firmness should meet your individual needs!
