Perry Ellis was defined by his peers as avant-garde. Colleague Richard Haines described his fashion as “classic with a twist.” Steven Kolb, CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, said his garments were “my way to step forward in fashion, but to still have a comfort level.” Fashion designer Michael Bastian stated that “no one did it better… He was able to be modern and yet not come off antiseptic.”

Fun Fact #1
Now a worldwide-known designer in his own right, but then just a young Parsons graduate, Marc Jacobs joined Perry Ellis as its creative director and vice president. He designed for the label from 1988 to 1993 and won The Women’s Designer of the Year Award in 1992 for his creations.
Fun Fact #2
Perry Ellis himself was a Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) fixture. He won the CFDA Fashion Award in 1981. From 1984 until his death in 1986, the designer served as the council’s president, and was awarded a Special Tribute at the New York’s Lincoln Center ceremony that year.
Fun Fact #3
As if being CFDA-approved wasn’t enough, Ellis was showered with awards from other bodies. Between 1979 and 1984, the cutting-edge designer was presented with a total of eight Coty Awards.
