A case of having the right socks: Which stockings work best with monkstrap shoes?
Monkstrap shoes belong to the loafer category, and can be worn with many outfits from classic to casual, by both men and women. The monkstrap, a closure with one or two buckles at the side of the foot, gives the shoe a striking character. Attention must be paid to having the right socks or stockings when styling. The valid question: Which stockings should be worn with monkstrap shoes?
Colorful socks:
Yes and no! Yes, if monkstrap shoes are worn in classic colors such as black, light to dark brown, or navy blue. The rules here are the same as the rules for other classic loafers: The stockings can be monocolor or have a diamond pattern, but they must be discreet. If the shoes are a flamboyant color such as bright green or lilac, which is currently in fashion for women’s models, the stockings should be a simple counterpart and stay in the background in terms of color and pattern. In this case it would be advisable to wear black, blue or brown stockings.
No socks?
Okay in principle, but it’s also easy to look like you forgot to put your stockings on. This look works better with sportier monkstrap shoes, and is easier to pull off for women than men, and the entire outfit makes a contribution: The trousers should have an unusual cut, preferably short and turned up rather than straight and classic.
No-nos with socks:
Since monkstrap shoes are always classic, even in their modern interpretation, the socks should be classic too. Especially when it comes to length. No-goes are the “new discoveries” such as sneaker socks, toe socks or the familiar tennis socks. Traditional men’s socks or knee-highs are better. Women can also wear ankle-length socks that are translucent or opaque. Animal prints such as leopard, tiger, snake etc. should only be worn in special cases, e.g. if the socks are to be the star of the outfit. Cartoons, stars and slogans are better with sneakers than monkstraps.
On the subject of socks and leather shoes: Monkstrap shoes convey a certain degree of quality. The socks should be able to do the same: Silk mixes and fine cotton make for elegant stockings, but the cheap you picked up at the bargain counter will ruin your well-heeled image!
