On Saturday, June 9, Queen Elizabeth will officially celebrate her 92nd birthday, even though the big day was a few months ago.
Why aren’t the official celebrations on her real birthday, April 21?
The double birthday tradition began more than 250 years ago by King George II in 1748. The King wanted to host a big celebration but his birthday was in November, a pretty dismal weather month in the UK. To combat the cold, he decided to have an official birthday for himself in June, so people could celebrate out in the sun.
The tradition stuck and has included a special parade called Trooping the Colour for the past 260 years to mark the day. The spectacle will feature more than 1400 soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians.
The Queen is the longest serving UK monarch, having reigned for an impressive 66 year. She’s also the oldest monarch. The previous holder was Queen Victoria (Elizabeth’s great-great-grandmother). Victoria died when she was 81.
This is the first time that newlyweds Meghan and Harry will be on the balcony together, as husband and wife.
