Questions to ask your partner before tying the knot

Marriage is a complicated, serious, lifelong commitment. If it falls through, it’s devastating and oh-so heartbreaking for everyone involved. If you think you’ve found the one, ask them a few of these questions. This will help you get a better understanding of their goals and a clearer picture as to what they want in life. Ultimately, this will help make sure there are no giant unpleasant surprises in your future together.

Are you in debt? It’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into financially. Finding out if your significant other is in debt might prompt you to delay your tying-the-know plans or reconsider your options.

Kids? How many? This is huge. You might love your life and independence and want no kids, but your significant other wants a huge family. Figure that out.

How good are your problem-solving skills? It’s good to talk about problem-solving and how you can bring your skills together in order to successfully figure things out. Power couple status!!

How good are you at budgeting? Figure out which one of you will be budgeting and taking care of finances. The other should be able to stay on track and not overspend.

Have you ever been arrested/ gotten in legal trouble? Just because you think you know your significant other, doesn’t always mean you do.

How much alone time do you need to be happy? While everyone needs a little bit of alone time, everyone has a different idea of their ideal amount of time together.

Do you expect your partner to work or stay home? If they doesn’t mind, great. Do what you’ve got to do. But, if they’re picky, then watch out. You might have to reevaluate and have a conversation with them before anything gets too serious.

What’s your 10-year plan? We all know things don’t go according to plan, but it would be nice to know what they’ve got in mind for their future and if it aligns with your goals and plans.
