Workout outfits inspired by ‘Cheer’ on Netflix

In 2020, not having heard of “Cheer” on Netflix is basically the equivalent of not knowing about the World Record Egg or being unable to name at least one royal baby.

The Netflix six-part docuseries follows Navarro College’s cheerleading team and their grueling preparation to compete in the National Cheerleading Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida.

“Cheer” tells the heart-wrenching personal stories of Navarro’s athletes and the fiercely demanding physical and mental competencies of high-stakes cheerleading. Under the fearless helm of Coach Monica Aldama, the team and five of its star athletes, Jerry Harris, Gabi Butler, Lexi Brumback, La’Darius Marshall, and Morgan Simianer, face multiple injuries, team setbacks, and arduous night-long practices that culminate in a final two-minute 15-second performance on mat.

The series has already been lauded as one of the best this year with a handful of Hollywood A-listers proclaiming themselves as “Cheer” devotees. Chrissy Teigen binged the show, writing on Twitter, “I just finished it in a day and have begun my Instagram stalking of the athletes. as the cheer kids say, I went full out,” and Beanie Feldstein wrote, “The reason we all love “Cheer” on Netflix is because it is unscripted “Friday Night Lights”!!!!! It is filling the clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose shaped hole in my heart!!!!!!”

And while critics would point out our lack of physical prowess or basic gymnastic skills needed to compete on mat with the Navarro team (do padded somersault’s count?), we can, with full confidence, blast “Cheer” playlists on Spotify and high-kick our hearts out in red and black Spandex.
