Do You Know These Victoria’s Secret Angels’ Secrets?
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show VS Angels have recently been announced and considering these goddesses will soon be stripping down to their skivvies, we thought it only necessary to air their dirty laundry before the Show’s CBS premiere on 5 December.
So far the deets for this Hot Girls Convention are: it will be recorded in Paris this month, Lady Gaga is confirmed to headline, and the biggest news of all, both Hadids will be walking the glittery runway. *gasps, screams, faints* (-_-)
While we anxiously await to see the Victoria’s Secret team’s creative new ways to use thousands of Swarvoski crystals, here’s this collection of VS Angels trivia to tide you over. Scroll on >>
Gigi Hadid – aside from being the older sister of Bella Hadid and daughter of Dutch model / Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast member Yolanda Foster – is not officially ‘Gigi Hadid’; her real name is Jelena Noura Hadid. Thanks to her dad, Mohamed, Gigi is a descendent of Daher el-Omar who ruled during the Ottoman Empire. (Same.)
Because of the 21-year-old’s booming modelling career she’s put a few things on the back burner, including her criminal psychology degree at The New School, and participating in competitive equestrian and volleyball (for which she totes captained the Malibu High School team). But the most incriminating? Gigi had a stint as a vlogger, with ‘Ask Gigi’ videos. We’d take life advice from you any day…
South African Candice Swanepoel was 15 when she was scouted at a Durban flea market. She grew up on a dairy fairy in Mooi River and says she was a massive tomboy. Fast forward to 2007 and she’s modelling for Victoria’s Secret, becoming an official angel in 2010.
On her personal style she’s previously told Into The Gloss she admires her mum’s style: ‘I love the big curls of the 80s. My mom was an aerobics teacher back then and she permed her hair and wore these huge earrings and high-cut thong leotards. She had the best style.’
Candice probably won’t pass down this philosophy to her new son, but what will be interesting, is when he finds out his badass mum has pierced nips.
Lily Aldridge is the genetically fortunate spawn of English artist Alan Aldridge and – wait for it – American Playboy Playmate Laura Lyons. Pretty coincidental that Lily followed her mum’s footsteps and landed this century’s equivalent, earning her Victoria’s Secret Angel wings in 2010.
Lily’s also revealed that her mum was a ‘jet bunny’ – a flight attendant on Playboy CEO Hugh Hefner’s private plane – and her dad has designed Penguin book covers and album artwork for the Beatles and Elton John. V. interesting she’s gone on to marry Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill, with whom she has a four-year-old girl, Dixie Pearl.
Behati Prinsloo, aside from being the wifey of Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine and mum of Dusty Rose, is the VS Angel who hails from Namibia and whose dad is a minister.
When Behati’s not naming her firstborns after Pantone colours, she’s photographing her mates – including Coco Rocha – mostly in black and white film on a Nikon F10 and Contax G2. The Sphinx cat owner (its name is Gollum, FYI) also admits she appeared in the first episode of MTV’s The City (*praise*).
Thirty-five-year-old Alessandra Ambrósio is doing pretty damn well for herself, and in more ways than one: Firstly, she’s one of the longest-running Victoria’s Secret Angels – thanks, Brazilian heritage, you done well – and secondly, she’s one of the wealthiest, too. In 2015 Ambrósio placed eighth on the Forbes list of highest-paid models. Makes sense, though; she’s been working with the lingerie brand since 2000 and has worn the esteemed Fantasy Bra twice. Not bad for a girl from Erexim.
Aside from this success, Ambrósio’s admitted she regrets having her ears pinned back when she was 11, as she experience complications from the surgery. Seems you’re doing okay, hun.
Now this one we did not expect: newbie VS Angel Josephine Skriver is not only a bonafide Danish hottie and an IVF baby, she grew up in a LGBTQ family with a gay father and lesbian mother. Skriver, now effectively the poster girl for ‘the new normal,’ is a proud advocate for LGBTQ rights, fiercely defending her parents’ decision to anyone who voices concern.
She told i-D, ‘I hope I can help raise awareness about how amazing and loving parents members of the LGBTQ community can be… Who they love does not make them any less capable of raising great human beings. The more people realise that my own upbringing and that of others were healthy, positive ones, the more they will come to understand that the love in an LGBTQ household is no different.’ You said it, gurl.
Cara Delevingne, aside from having the most Spellcheck-unfriendly surname ever, is the hilariously outspoken British model-turned-actress whose eyebrows have their own dedicated fan Twitter account (among other body parts of hers). A bit of a geek, she loves a good video game sesh and is particularly partial to Call of Duty, for which she stared in the Black Ops III trailer (NBD). Model/socialite Poppy Delevingne is obvs her sister, but did you know Joan Collins is Cara’s godmother? Pro’ly not.
Speaking of fam, Cara had a bit of an unusual upbringing: her mum Pandora is a famed socialite and while on the scene, started partying a little too hard, where this, coupled with her bipolar disorder, escalated to a heroin addiction. Cara has openly spoken about this and her own mental health issues, including battling depression, and is now a huge proponent of others speaking out and asking for help if they need it. Good on her, we say.
It’s no secret Karlie Kloss is a massive nerd (and mega babe), but what you might not know about the 24-year-old mogul is that her fallback career is medicine. Her fallback career. The Overachievers Anonymous candidate has voiced that she’s always thought paediatrics would be the right job for her should modelling not work out.
Yet as her endless brand partnerships and entrepreneurial projects keep on keeping on – let’s not forget her Karlie’s Kookies fundraising company and Kode with Karlie computer coding lessons – her doctor dad will probably have to wait a few more years for that one to transpire…
Victoria’s Secret veteran Adriana Lima apparently used to hate getting her picture taken and would cry whenever she was photographed. How tables have turned, because the 2008 Victoria’s Secret Super Bowl XLII advertisement she starred in was the single most-seen ad of the game, receiving over 103 million views. Despite retiring from Victoria’s Secret last year, Adriana remains the second-biggest earner from the Victoria’s Secret alumnae (after Gisele Bundchen) with a cool, estimated $9 million for 2015.
Oh, and, because the Bahian model is a devout Roman Catholic, she purportedly waited until she was 27 to lose her V plates. Sex after marriage and all that.
Aussie model Miranda Kerr is the epitome of girl-next-door beauty. Though she’s hung up her wings, she’s continued to work with huge brands, such as Swarovski, Clinique, and David Jones, in addition to having a child with actor Orlando Bloom and getting together with Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegal. But before all of this glitz and glamour, the Gunnedah-born brunette experienced heartbreak early on in life.
At 16 Miranda was faced with the death of her first boyfriend, who was killed instantly in a car crash. After the tragic event Family Kerr moved to Brisbane, where Miranda slowly recovered and made the most of her Dolly magazine modelling competition win at 13-years-old. A decade later she became the first Australian model to receive Victoria’s Secret Angelship and became the face of PINK, succeeding Alessandra Ambrósio.
