6 Under-The-Radar Designers To Bundle Up In Before Spring
1. Saks Potts
Established by Barbara Potts and Cathrine Saks, this Copenhagen-based label is a modern day promoter of go-big-or-go-home outerwear. They take an avant-garde approach to coats by utilizing unusual textures, unique cuts and bold colors. After its third successful collection, the young brand has even made fans among fashion’s biggest influencers like Leandra Medine.
2. MSGM
Launched by DJ-turned-designer Massimo Giorgetti in 2009, this Italian brand specializes in bright hues, digital patterns and interesting shapes. The result? Fresh collections in kaleidoscopic colors and prints that are equal parts polished, playful and carefree – with a hint of sporty attitude. Outerwear in bright pink, electric orange and highlighter yellow are blended with everything from mohair coats sporting contrast pockets to patchwork Mongolian lamb chubbies.
4. Mira Mikati
London-based Lebanese designer, Mira Mikati, began her fashion career in 2007 as co-founder of the Middle East's leading concept store, Plum and decided to venture out on her own after a successful capsule collection with Façonnable. Now in its second season, Mira Mikati combines fun, emoji-style detailing and whimsical accents with elegant, tailored silhouettes that count Beyoncé and Rihanna as fans. Our favorites? The bomber jackets embroidered with googly eyes and the emoticon print overcoats.
5. Shrimps
Launched in 2013 by entrepreneurial Londoner Hannah Weiland, you would think Shrimps was conceived out of the lucky notion that there would be a need for more fur in fashion. Using carefully sourced fabrics that emphasize color and texture, Hannah creates uniquely fun, well-priced coats that are PETA-approved. Shrimps hasn’t been around very long, although you’d never guess it by the sea of stars seen sporting her sixties-inspired trademarks.
While Mother of Pearl is old news in London's emerging design scene, the label is finally hitting its stride stateside with coveted pieces that count Florence Welch, Lena Dunham and Cara Delevigne as fans. Founded in 2002 by stylist Maia Norman, the label relaunched in 2008 with a more modern, sporty vibe, which continues today under the creative direction of Amy Powney. Powney develops her own unique prints and uses pattern to juxtapose their signature sportswear-inspired aesthetic with luxury fabrics.
