Why Skincare Is Worth Splurging On, But Makeup Isn’t
Beautiful skin has never gone out of style. For as long as we know, women have used at-home remedies to better their skin and ensure clarity, glow and overall youthfulness. Back then, makeup wasn’t common. Women aged so beautifully and were able to maintain great skin well into their elderly years.
If you ask your grandmothers what they used on their skin, they’ll tell you that honey, yogurt and avocado were among the main ingredients they applied for nourishment. Turmeric, chickpea flour and rose water were also common ingredients in beauty regiments.
So Why Spend Money on Skincare, But Not Makeup?
It’s more simple than you might think. Think of your skin as a canvas: if the canvas is dirty, textured and imperfect, the paint won’t sit right.
1. Anti-aging: Makeup provides no anti-aging benefits. In fact, it might actually speed up the process and prevent your skin from looking as youthful as it should. This is due to tugging at the skin when applying makeup and clogging the pores. The right skincare, on the other hand, helps keep your skin youthful and clear, reducing natural aging effects.
2. Makeup is temporary: You spend an average of $50 on a high-end foundation from your favourite makeup retailer, say Sephora. When the bottle is done, you buy another one and that’s how that story goes. You can spend the same amount on a bottle of serum or moisturizer and the effects of that are lasting and will show in how your skin looks at the time and ages later.
3. Beautiful Skin Is Always Trending: Makeup trends come and go. One week it’s blinding highlighter, the next week it’s bold brows and then suddenly neon shadow comes back in the game. You’re constantly spending money to keep up with these trends. But, beautiful skin is always trending. There isn’t a time where you feel comfortable if you’ve got a ton of hyperpigmentation or textured skin.
4. Nice Skin = Cheaper Makeup: When your skin is clear, nourished and healthy, you don’t have to cake on high-end makeup to look good. A trip to the drugstore will cost you maybe $50 for a full-face. These products will look just as good as the high-end stuff considering the clarity of your skin. The glow comes from within, not from the $60 gold highlighter in the fancy packaging.
