Key storage: from plates to key cabinets

Key storage: from plates to key cabinets

There’s only one way of avoiding the never-ending search for keys: a tidy key storage system, either attached to the wall next to the coat rack or on a table.

For people with only a few keys: a vase, plate or bowl

The simplest means of storing keys is to use some kind of receptacle. Low vases with wide openings, pewter plates or porcelain bowls are good options, but other receptacles can also be used. It’s a case of anything goes – baskets, little wooden boxes or even a copper pot – as long as it helps you keep things organized while doubling up as a decorative accessory that enhances your entrance hall. There’s only one disadvantage with this method of storing keys: anyone and everyone has access to your keys.

For halls short on space: key hanging boards

Simply hammering a nail into the wall is the easiest solution for hanging up a bunch of keys, but not necessarily the most aesthetic one. A good alternative is a key hanging board or a larger wall board which doubles up as a notice board.

  • Wooden models: There’s no limit to the possibilities when it comes to key hanging systems – you can opt for anything from the minimalistic solution consisting of a narrow strip of wood with simple steel hooks, to a meter-long painted board with hand-forged hooks. The design and size of a key hanging board is merely dependent on the number of keys and the wall area available. There are countless design options, including curved or rectangular boards decorated with captions or painted motifs.
  • Metal models: The more chic, modern key hanging boards are made from metal, generally steel, but in some cases brass or iron. Wall boards of this kind often feature patterns, captions or motifs, thus doubling up as interesting decorative accessories.

For people with lots of keys: key cabinets

This category includes anything from decorative little wooden boxes to mini safes with combination locks. If you have a little more space for storing your keys and want to make sure they’re absolutely safe, a key cabinet is the answer.

  • Wooden models:

– Look out for shabby-chic or cottage-style key cabinets with louver doors or a door with a heart-shaped cut-out; cabinets shaped like little houses are also available.

– Another alternative is a key cabinet with mirrored door.

  • Metal models:

– brushed steel boxes with a range of different doors;

– colorful enamelled boxes with rounded edges or shaped like a letterbox.

For people who only have a few keys, plates and other receptacles are the ideal place for storing them. However, anyone with a substantial number of heavy keyrings is well advised to purchase a sturdy key hanging board or cabinet.
