How often do you have visitors and how long do they stay on average? And how quickly should a bed be set up and put away afterwards? We can help you find the right guest bed for your living situation:
Murphy beds
- Variations: plain and simple in box form that you can fold up, or with extra shelves and cupboards to put books, clothes or household utensils
- Advantage: Murphy beds are practical and create order because they can be quickly folded out and then folded away. This is particularly important in a room where a bed would be in the way during the day.
- Living situation: They are a fixed part of the room and are appropriate for homes that don’t have a guestroom, but have enough space for another piece of furniture.
- Budget: Murphy beds are a long-term investment and tend to be in higher price categories. Prices begin at USD 750 and go up to around USD 2000.
2. Folding beds
- Variations: Folding beds with metal frames and spring mattresses – for children or a single guest. Double-bed versions also exist for couples. These are mostly wide foam mattresses.
- Advantage: If necessary, they can be set up in the middle of the lounge room and then quickly stowed away in a closet or under another bed
- Living situation: Folding beds are great for people who don’t have enough room for a permanent guest bed.
- Budget: cheaper than Murphy beds, but not quite as comfortable. Prices range from USD 50 to around USD 300.
3. Drawer and storage beds
- Variations: with a second mattress in a drawer under the actual bed, or with extra storage space provided by drawers or shelves for stowing bed linen or clothes
- Advantage: Drawer beds are space-saving and compact, and can be very simply pulled out when you have unexpected guests.
- Living situation: suitable for a guest room or for your own room if you want to have the option of having a second bed that you can pull out.
- Budget: somewhat more expensive. However, because of their sturdy wooden frames, high quality mattresses and timeless design it’s a purchase that is well worth it in the long-run. Prices range from USD 120 to about USD 500.
If you don’t have a lot of room, you need to be smart when it comes to choosing a guest bed. You have to decide whether it is going to be a permanent or temporary piece of furniture. If you do have a guestroom, it is best to go for a durable and high quality option with storage space.
