Cocktail Rings: A Brief History

Cocktail Rings: A Brief History

Prohibition was that random time period in U.S. history from 1920 to 1933 during which the sale and production of alcohol was illegal. Nowadays we shudder to think of such restrictions, but we’re not here to talk about that. We want to talk about something dear to our hearts that probably would not have come to be if it wasn’t for Prohibition—the cocktail ring.

Here is a brief history of this timeless, unique and eye-catching ring.

Go Big Or Go Home

It’s called the “Roaring ‘20s” for a reason. Corsets were finally old news and women everywhere were celebrating their newfound independence, both sartorially and financially, like never before. Everyone went out dressed to see and be seen. And since alcohol could not be consumed freely, men and women enjoyed the illicit libations at underground cocktail parties…

Hard To Miss

At these parties, women needed a show-stopping accessory to go along with their flapper dresses. Thus the cocktail ring was born—a ring usually characterized by a single large gemstone in the middle. It was the perfect accessory to flash and make sure all eyes were on you while sipping on a Gin Rickey, Tom Collins or Mary Pickford.

Still Going Strong

While the usage of the term “cocktail” has somewhat waned, these babies still reign supreme as statement rings. You don’t have to be headed to a cocktail party to don one of these dazzling rings. Make a statement with a round, crystal cocktail ring you can rock to work with a fresh manicure. Or personalize your statement by going for a gem that resembles your birthstone.

We have a lot to thank for the bold, independent women of the ‘20s, and the cocktail ring is no exception.  Its allure isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

These cocktail rings are the bee’s knees.
