Carrot Jeans 2.0 – 1980s clothing re-interpreted
From a fashion perspective, the 80s are known as the decade of bad taste. But that’s not exactly fair. Back then, a strong sense of individualism made it essential for clothes to make a statement. Media influence shaped fashion like no other decade before it. Today, favorite pieces from all those years ago are being reinterpreted. Stylight presents four 80s trends, which are seeing a revival – in a totally new style:
1. Carrot jeans
Classic carrot jeans are loose at the knees and get tighter the closer you get to the ankles. They were THE must-have item of 1980s clothing and are known today as “mom jeans”. At the time, men and women often wore them with rolled-up oversized denim shirts, large blousons and tennis socks.
Newly styled: Due to the high-waist look of carrot jeans, women like to pair them with crop tops. They then roll up the pant legs and slip on a pair of chucks. Printed shirts and sneakers are great matches for men.
2. Neon
In the 80s, this color was everywhere: Neon! Hoop earrings, blousons or even entire outfits, nothing was safe from this trend.
Newly styled: Nowadays neon is back in fashion, but far more subtly, adding a little extra something to outfits. For example, women wear it on shoes, bags and statement necklaces. Men wear neon watches, T-shirt prints or laces. These days you should only combine it with neutral colors!
3. Leggings
The 1980s fitness video trend made athletic leggings the height of fashion. They were available in every conceivable color, and of course in neon as well. They were combined with oversized tops and waist belts. Unlike today, they were also worn by men for sports.
Newly styled: Dear men: We know that leggings are comfortable, but it’s probably best if you stick to sweatpants. For women, the rule is: Buying leggings in neutral colors like black is best. If you have a good figure, the 80s oversized top look still works today. Otherwise simply slip on a skirt over the leggings.
4. Denim jackets
Denim jackets are also an indispensable part of the 80s style. Like most jackets, they were often worn by both men and women in an oversized look.
Newly styled: The denim jacket has survived, the three-sizes-too-large look has not. Instead, wear tightly fitted jackets with black skinny jeans or an all over denim look with cowboy boots.
But beware: A revival is not the same thing as a full-on comeback! The Madonna-style perm and – heaven forbid! – the mullet should stay right where they belong: in the 80s.
