The Intrecciato Weave:
Like Burberry’s famous check and Christian Louboutin’s red sole, Bottega Veneta’s “intrecciato” weave is one of the most recognizable motifs in the world of luxury. This unique woven leather was originally produced by passing strips of leather through a base panel cut with slits, but under Tomas Maier the technique has now been refined: double-sided leather strips are braided by hand, for a stronger weave and finish on both sides. Intrecciato is hand braided at a rate of an inch per minute, allowing it to take up to two days to make a single item.
The Craftsmanship:
All Bottega Veneta leather is sourced from France or Spain, naturally dyed and then treated and finished in Italy, a process that can take several days. 230 craftsmen work at the Vicenza workshop, where most production is carried out by hand. The company even offers a service where its wallets and bags can be sent back to Italy for cleaning and reconditioning.
The Details:
The durable, heavy-duty zippers are engraved with the Bottega Veneta name, not to mention tested several times before they leave the workshop.
