Long coats for men – what type of coat suits what type of body?
There’s no denying that the coolest long coats for men were those sported by the likes of Clint Eastwood in the old Westerns: all in brown, a bit scruffy looking and with a long slit up the back. This type of coat became a star in its own right when framed against a saloon in a dust-swathed Wild West town. Although most men nowadays are thankful that the days of swaggering cowboys have been and gone, the long coat is still a highlight in any man’s wardrobe. The question is: What type of long coat suits what type of gent? Read on to find out!
1. Small and slender
You’re more of an intellectual type, with a reserved personality and not particularly broad shoulders.
The long coat to suit you: Go for thin fabrics that aren’t too overwhelming. It’s like when you don a suit: you want to carry yourself with style, not look like a coat hanger. The same applies when it comes to the long coat. Trench coat cuts are perfect, as they accentuate the shoulders without going overboard. Clean-cut coats made from shiny material have a similar effect. The coat should be no longer than calf-length, as otherwise your legs will be totally hidden, making you look as if you’re wearing a dressing gown.
2. Tall and muscular
Broad shoulders, powerful arms, tall stature and a generally well-toned muscular appearance. Ring any bells?
The long coat to suit you: Dr. Zhivago drove women wild with his heavy Russian-style long coat featuring extra wide lapels. Fake fur is a good alternative to the real thing. And it’s fine to go for something showy as long as it’s not too garish. Patterns such as classic checks or pinstripes lend a touch of elegance. With your build, you can afford to wear a very long coat, but it’s best to refrain from adding a belt or too much bling.
3. Slim and average
Not too tall and not too small, neither broad-shouldered nor skinny, torso and legs of equal length.
The long coat to suit you: simple or showy? Whatever tickles your fancy. Contrasting sleeves, brushed fabric with extravagant lapels, knee-length or ankle-length – the choice is yours! There’s just one thing to bear in mind: It’s best not to look too normal, too boring, too simple or too average. A bit of extra detailing makes a statement about your sense of style.
As regards cowboys: They always look as if they’ve just got down off their horse. But just because you’re wearing a long coat doesn’t mean you have to adopt the typical cowboy gait, even if you feel tempted. It’s best to walk normally and forget the film-star swagger.
