Back To The Start
Marmot began as a club started by college students in the 1970s. They were visiting Alaska’s Juneau icefield for a glaciology project when they started the club, which required one to climb a glaciated peak with another Marmot to become a member. Get ready for a climb of your own even if you left college behind long ago with a pair of Marmot pants.
Hollywood Special
A few years later those former college students started Marmot the company, which was originally a retail and rental shop in Colorado. One of the co-founders met a famous adventure filmmaker who was shooting a film with Clint Eastwood, who said he needed some “very puffy jackets” for the movie, and Marmot’s winter coats were born. Now you can have a very puffy jacket of your own even if you don’t have a director calling the shots.
Early Adopters
Gore-Tex, the revolutionary material that manages to be waterproof and breathable simultaneously, is now common fare in many high-performance outdoor goods. But there was a time when it was brand-new and nobody had heard of it, and that’s when Marmot adopted it.
