How to DIY your own blanket ladder

Looking for a quick and easy way to create a cozy space in your home? Try a blanket ladder.

They’re a no-commitment remedy for bare walls and an affordable option to upgrade any living space.

We reached out to DIY home blogger & stylist Erin Francois from the blog Francois et Moi to give us tips and tricks on making your own custom blanket ladder.

How to DIY a blanket ladder

To make your own DIY blanket ladder, you can follow Erin’s instructions on her blog, or for an even easier remedy, the Minneapolis-resident gave us these tips:

  • “If you don’t have access to a saw, many hardware stores will cut the wood dowels for you. Take advantage of this free service!
  • “Skip the tapered ladder look,” Erin says. “Use dowels that are all one width to streamline the process. Then simply drill holes on the vertical dowels and glue into place.”
  • And to simplify the process even further, “skip the wood stain. Go au naturale and let the beauty of the wood shine through.”

Home basics everyone should own

The home basics Erin says everyone should own? “I’d say get yourself a sewing machine.

When I first was on my own, I learned how to sew for the sole purpose of creating inexpensive, yet large and custom throw pillows for my place. There’s nothing like surrounding yourself with beautiful textiles to help your place feel a little more like home,” the home blogger told us.

Additionally, investing in a cordless drill is key for so many DIY projects. “I like to shop for cool, premade legs and screw them into benches, stools, and table tops for unique, handmade furniture.”

Painter’s tape and spray paint are also great cost-effective tools to own to personalize your space.

“Upgrade the look of nearly anything from furniture to lighting to decorative accessories with a coat of spray paint,” Erin said.

“User painter’s tape to add custom surface designs to truly make it your own.”
