Once upon a time, a man never went out without his hat and coat. These days it’s rare to see a man in a hat, and all too often it feels distinctly try-hard. Learn how to pull off a felt hat by pairing it thoughtfully and without pretense.
The Shape of Things
The difference between a tacky topper and a chic hat is all in the shape. Whether it’s a classic fedora, a dapper trilby or a Stetson, you need to be aware of the form of your hat before you buy. Wearing a too-small hat gives the impression that it’s perched atop your head, and an outlandishly large hat can dwarf you. Make sure that your hat is proportional to your body and you’ll avoid looking silly.
All The Trimmings
Feathers, ribbons, and stripes, oh my! It’s good to bedeck a hat with a little something extra to keep it from being too basic, but over-embellish and you’ll wind up looking like a peacock. The best hat embellishments for menswear are either subtle, like a muted grosgrain ribbon, or spontaneous, like a wildflower plucked from the roadside and stuck into the brim.
